5 Reasons You Should Be Doing HIIT

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a type of workout in which you give all-out 100% effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods. This type of training keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. During a HIIT workout your body experiences Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC), which has been called by many the "afterburn effect. " HIIT workouts have endless possibilities with the combination of exercises that can be done. Below are some very basic HIIT workouts to give you an idea of what they look like.


Here are a few benefits that HIIT provides:

1) It is More Effective at Burning Fat

HIIT training has been shown to burn more fat than regular exercise. Dr. Kevin Campbell, a Cardiologist in North Carolina, explains the afterburn effect,“The best way to think of EPOC is a way for your body to pay off an ‘oxygen debt’ after an intense workout. This is why our bodies are able to burn more calories after working out.”

2) It Saves You Time

HIIT workouts are extremely efficient. Some people don't have hours to spend in the gym and some people just simply don't want to. There are studies that show that just 15 minutes of HIIT can be more effective than 1 hour of jogging.


3) You Can Do Them Anywhere

Life can easily get in the way of even the most disciplined athletes. HIIT workouts do just that, they allow you the freedom to workout in the park, your living room, even a hotel room.

4) You Don't Need Equipment

One of the coolest things about HIIT is that you can still get a great workout even if you have zero equipment. HIIT workouts can be used with almost any equipment but if you don’t have access to a gym, don't have any equipment at home, or if you travel a lot, you can still do HIIT! Sprints, burpees, high knees, air squats—there are so many no equipment necessary possibilities for HIIT!


5) It's Challenging

HIIT forces you to work harder than you ever thought possible and challenges you mentally and physically which leads to personal growth and raises confidence. HIIT pushes you to your limits, giving you a feeling of accomplishment.
